Secure connected campus for a growing school

A reference campus network integrating identity-aware Wi-Fi, fiber, filtering and physical security.

Published

This is a planning example written by EngineSpire to show how we would approach the problem. It is not a completed client project, and its outcomes are design targets rather than measured results.

The challenge

A school needs consistent access across classrooms and common spaces while controlling student, staff, guest, CCTV and administrative traffic. Limited visibility makes recurring performance complaints hard to resolve.

The solution pattern

The proposed solution combines a resilient fiber core, capacity-led Wi-Fi, identity-based access, segmented security policy, centralized logs and camera-network isolation. Dashboards focus on user experience, uplink health and critical service availability.

How the work would be phased

  1. PHASE 01

    Measure the current experience

Survey Wi-Fi, check uplink utilization and map complaints by building and time of day to find the real bottlenecks.

  2. PHASE 02

    Design core and capacity

Plan the fiber core and building links, and design Wi-Fi from the number of students using devices in each classroom at once.

  3. PHASE 03

    Introduce role-based access

Separate students, staff, guests and building devices, and connect access policies to the school's directory.

  4. PHASE 04

    Protect sensitive systems

Isolate cameras and administrative systems in their own segments and apply content filtering by role.

  5. PHASE 05

    Install around the calendar

Schedule installation for school breaks, then set up dashboards and logs and train the support team before classes resume.

Trade-offs and considerations

  • Content filtering needs policy decisions from school leadership, not only technical settings.
  • Student devices vary widely, so onboarding must be simple enough for a small support team to handle at the start of term.
  • Installation during term disrupts classes. Surveys and design can happen during term so installation fits the break.
  • Network and access logs about students are personal information. Set who may view them and how long they are kept.
